  13. About Panhala Fort
  14. Panhala is the largest of all the Deccan forts. It was built by Raja Bhoj between 1178-1209 AD. Maratha king Shivaji Maharaj is believed to have spent more than 500 days in this fort. Two bronzed statues of Shivjai's loyal aides, Shiva Kharshed and Baji Prabhu Desphande, add to the fort's historical value

The land here is a trekker's paradise and is best explored on foot (for those who have the stamina!).

Visit Sajja Kothi where Sambhaji was imprisoned and Ambabai Temple, where Shivaji used to seek his blessings before venturing out on an expedition. Don't miss the huge Amberkhana, which is said to be able to hold 25,000 khandis (50,000 mounds) of corn. The corn used to be poured into it from symmetrical gaps in the ceiling.

We also recommends Sunset Point, which offers a spectacular view of the valley.

Teen Darwaza, as the name suggests, is the gateway comprising three gates on the western wall of the fort. It is through these gates that the British entered when they captured Panhala. In this skirmish, the British destroyed the gates.
